There is a new innovation in the world of Magnetic Resonance Imaging. It is specially designed for breast scans and has made the entire examination more enduring and comforting due to its compact, open design that has a diameter of only 70 centimeters, while the magnet bore is 10 centimeters wider as compared to most conventional systems.

This new innovation is a product of Siemens and was named Magnetom Espree-Pink. This 1.5-Tesla system is the shortest system available on the market today. With this breakthrough, patients can be positioned either feet-first or head-first and the scanner can also offer sufficient space for adipose patients.

Furthermore, the flexible “Sentinelle Vanguard for Siemens” coil solution makes both imaging and biopsies possible by only using a coil. Also, the coil can be optimally adapted to the different breast sizes of various patients due to its variable coil geometry (VCG). Excellent image quality is attained through an improved signal-to-noise ratio and with the help of eight RF channels.

I have been posting here some guides on various methods/techniques of radiographic positioning. Now, I would like to update you on the new technology that will ease the workloads of the Radiologic Technologists.

During a visit to a clinic I saw the greatest device for positioning and I thought that I’d mention it since you are writing about positioning the patient. This device – the Gymie-R from J2 Medical – allows you to position the cassette instead of the patient. It holds the cassette into any position that you need and makes the patient more comfortable. Just thought I’d fill you in about the product b/c it’s super helpful!

J2 Medical (Booth 9516) is introducing a host of medical data services to accompany the unveiling of the Gymie-R Cassette Holder along with a complete scaling line for the Akucal x-ray calibration tool. The Akucal includes a sphere reference marker with radiopaque indicators to help remove possible sphere size misinterpretation by embedding the sphere size within the x-ray image.

The Akucal sphere acts as a standard to which the anatomy shown in the x-ray image can be accurately measured via simple calibration. This ultimately improves accuracy during the pre-surgical planning stage and limits the number of steps required by the technologist providing enhanced workflow for the radiology department, the company says.

In addition, J2 is highlighting several new bases for the Akucal. The first is the flat base, which is a three-sided, flat, plastic, stable unit perfect for use on horizontal surfaces. The second addition is the Magneto, which features a 50mm round magnetic base with exceptional holding power. The third option is a Bucky clamp, which allows the Akucal to be securely mounted to any upright Bucky stand.

Additionally, J2 Medical is releasing the Gymie-R Cassette Holder, a fully positional x-ray cassette holder. It eliminates the need for cumbersome stands and reduces the need for technologist assistance during image exposure. The Gymie-R features a table clamp mounting system, with an expansion slot tray for easy cassette insertion and removal, combined with a flexible arm for perfect cassette positioning.

The Philippine Association for Radiation Protection (PARP) – Cebu Chapter will hold their 5th Biennial Chapter Convention on 7 March 2009. The theme for the Convention is:

Imaging tests increasingly help in diagnosing patients, meaning the already-hot hiring market for radiologic technologists (RTs) should remain strong for the next several years, especially for those who graduated from A level colleges. Current demand is reflected in higher salaries for RTs nationwide. RTs earn an average of about $59,000 a year — up 12.8 percent since 2004, according to the American Society of Radiologic Technologists’ 2007 Wage and Salary Survey.

While most are employed by hospitals, RTs can work in many specialties and settings — both within and outside healthcare. As the population ages and the need for diagnostic imaging increases, the US Department of Labor is predicting faster-than-average job growth for radiology professionals.
