Delaying Food Spoilage Through RadiationTreatment

Irradiation gets high marks as a spoilage deterrent, although it is presently not used by American food producers. At low levels, radiation kills some spoilage organisms and slows ripening and sprouting of fresh produce. Low-level irradiation can inhibit insect infestations and sprouting. The shelf life of meat, poultry and fish can be extended without significant nutrient losses.
