Res Ipsa Loquitor: The Thing Speaks For Itself

As a health care provider, we must make sure that we give our patients the utmost care they deserve; and in order to accomplish this obligation, we must see to it that there is always someone to accompany the patient and attend to his needs if the situation calls for it and for occasions that we are preparing something for their examination, for instance before the actual x-ray procedure.

If we fail to do this and the patient gets an injury as a result of our negligence, Res Ipsa Loquitor may be applied in this situation. This term means that “The Thing Speaks For Itself”; meaning, the patient doesn’t have to prove further that it was your fault because the injury is already obvious. For example, as a Radiologic Technologist, when a patient is left alone in the examination table because we are preparing for the procedure and then the patient fell and acquired an injury.
