- an x-ray examination to used to identify obstruction either in the liver or the bile ducts that slow or stop the flow of bile from the liver to the digestive system

Preparation
- Fasting
- Medications (aspirin) or non-steroidal anti inflammatory drugs be stipped 3-7 days prior to examination
Procedure
1. px on the radiographic table
2. px’s right side is surgically prepared and draped
3. administration of local anesthesia
4. needle is parallel to the floor and inserted through the right lateral intercostal into the biliary.
5. stylet of the needle is withdrawn and a syringe filled with contrast medium is attached to the needle.
6. Needle is slowly withdrawn until the contrast medium is seen to fill the ducts.
7. guide wire is the passed through the lumen of the needle and the needle is removed.
8. catheter is passed over the guide wire and the wire is removed.
9. do spot films in multiple projections
