Foot Anatomy

-consist of 26 bones
-the bones of foot are shaped and joined together to form series of longitudinal transverse arches

Subdivided into three parts
1. tarsus or bones of the ankle
2. metatarsus or bones of the instep
3. phalanges or bones of the toes
for descriptive purposes the foot is divided into:
1. forefoot
-includes the metatarsal and toes
2. midfoot
-includes the cuneiform, navicular and cuboid
3. hindfoot
-includes the talus(astragalus), and calcaneus(os calcis)
Phalanges
-14 phalanges in the toes
-2 in the great toe
-3 in each of other toes
-great toe
-distal and proximal phalanges
-other toes
-proximal, middle, and distal phalanges
Metatarsal
-5 metatarsals
-consist of a body or shaft and two extremities
Tarsals
-seven tarsals in the ankle
-calcaneus (os calcis)
-talus (astrasalus)
-scaphoid (navicular)
-cuboid
-3 cuneiforms
-calcaneus is the largest
