CHAMBERLAIN METHOD OF DEMONSTRATING ABNORMAL SACROILIAC MOTION

Upright images in cases of sacroiliac slip or relaxation:

  1. a conventional lateral position centered to the lumbosacral junction .
  2. Two PA projections of the pubic bones with the patient in upright position and with weight – bearing on the alternate legs

– this examination requires two blocks or box tools approximately 6 inches high and removed to allow one leg to hang free.

Film: 8 x 10 (18 x 24 cm)

Position of patient

  • patient in PA position standing on the two blocks before a vertical grid device
  • adjust the height of the grid and center the film to the symphysis pubis

Position of part

  • midsagittal plane of the body is centered to the midline of the grid, adjust the body in AP position
  • allow the patient grasp the sides of the device to steady himself/herself unless contraindicated
  • a compression band may be placed across the pelvis to immobilize he patient
  • remove one of the blocks so that one leg hangs free and instruct the patient to hand his/her leg for the first exposure
  • replace the first support and remove the opposite one for the 2nd exposure
  • respiration is suspended

Central ray

  • direct the CR perpendicularly and centered to the pubic sumphysis

Structure shown

  • two PA projection of the pubic bones are shown and any abnormal motion of the sacroiliac joints

Evaluation criteria

  • symphysis pubis should be in the center of the radiograph and patient should not be rotated
